What To Expect From Inter This Season 2023/2024
The new season is underway. All clubs in the Italian Serie A have played 12 matches so far. Inter takes the first place with 31 points. Immediately behind them is Juventus with 29 points, followed by AC Milan with 23 points. Is this Inter’s season? Will they manage to reach the finish line first? Will they avoid losing points in the last few games like they did two years ago when Milan won the championship?
Inter’s Strong Start!
Inter started the season exceptionally well. This is one of their best starts ever. They have won 10 games, drawn 1, and suffered 1 unexpected loss to Sassuolo at Giuseppe Meazza. In these 12 games, Inter scored 29 times and conceded only 6, placing them in the top 3 defenses in Europe’s Big Five. Only Nica in the French championship conceded fewer goals. In 11 games, they conceded 4 times, but to be honest, in 12 games they scored only 11 times.
Back to Inter now. The team looks really good, and they are currently dominating Serie A. Lautaro Martinez has found his form, being the top scorer at the moment with 12 goals. It’s his best season ever so far. To compare this with last season, he scored 21 goals. Now, he is only halfway through, and the season is not even in the middle. The assist leaders in Serie A are Hakan Chalhanoglu and Federico Dimarco, assisting 5 and 4 times respectively. The defense is doing a great job, as mentioned earlier, Inter has conceded only 6 times. The midfield is packed with great players, among which are Nicolo Barella and Davide Frattesi, not to mention Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who played a significant role in the demolition of AC Milan in the 4th round (the score was 5:1).
Simone Inzaghi
The head coach of Inter plays a significant role in this success so far. He was on the verge of being sacked last year, but he managed to survive. First, he led the team to the final of the UEFA Champions League, where Inter faced Manchester City. The result was 1:0 for Manchester City, but the victory could have gone in the other direction as well. Inter missed some chances that could have changed the game.
As mentioned, Inzaghi was really close to being sacked. Yet, he survived as the head coach. After the Champions League final, the management board decided to award him for it and offered him a new contract. He finally composed the respective team. First, he decided not to bring Lukaku for another loan from Chelsea. Then, he decided to buy the young Marcus Thuram from B. Monchengladbach. This transfer was a great job. Thuram showed that he is capable of doing good things at Inter. So far, he has scored 4 goals and assisted 5 times. A real team player, something Inzaghi loves. Then, Inzaghi decided to sell Onana to Manchester United for a little over 50 million EUR and bring Sommer from Bayern Munich as his replacement. Many were suspicious of this move, but Sommer proved he can be counted on. Only 6 goals conceded in 12 games show exactly that.
Ongoing Campaign
Inter is playing very well in Serie A and in the UEFA Champions League. In both competitions, they are in first place. They have the team, they have the bench—everything needed to play well in both competitions. We will see how far they will go this year in the UCL, but I am certain (if injuries avoid them) that they will win the Italian Serie A this year. They are far better than their fierce rivals Juventus and AC Milan at the moment, and they have a great chance to clinch the title. On Sunday (26th of November), Inter will play against Juventus. In this game, we will see what Inter is really capable of. Anyway, so far, they have beaten Roma and AC Milan. We will see if they will beat Juventus as well.
