Inter Milan was struggling in past 2 years in domestic championship. Regardless of last year’s final in UEFA Champions League, Inter squad failed to clinch the title in Serie A. Napoli won the competition with big margin. Simone Inzaghi was on the verge of being sacked in the mid-season last season. However, reaching the final and offering the great game against Manchester City convinced the owner of Inter to give him another chance. Although they lost the final with the score of 1:0, Inzaghi kept his job. The season was not that bad since Inter won the Italian Coppa Italia.

Current Season – Winning Streak

At the summer transfer window, Inter bought Yan Sommer, Banjamin Pavard, Marko Arnautovic, Marcus Thuram. They also retrieved Alexis Sanchez who was on a loan in France Ligue 1 side Marseille. Andre Onana left the team for a record transfer to Manchester United. This move was seen as a mistake. However, Sommer showed everyone that he has more to offer concerning his age. In the 35 games so far, he kept clean sheet in 21 games.

In the ongoing season, Inter is dominating the Serie A. They have only one loss, the unexpected one against Sassuolo. Inter is first on the table with 75 points in 28 rounds. Milan and Juventus are in the second and third place with 59 and 58 points respectively. This is only one of the indicators of Inter’s domination in this year’s competition. They are the most efficient team with 70 goals. Closest to them in the efficiency are Roma who scored 54 goals and they sit in the 5th place. Also, Inter conceded least goals in the Serie A, only 13. This is also the lowest in all “Big Five” leagues. Lautaro Martinez is the best scorer with 21 goals, followed by Dusan Vlahovic who scored 13.

Aside from the statistics, Inter plays the most beautiful football in Italy at the moment, maybe in most beautiful in Europe as well. Inter plays well in the UEFA Champions League as well. They are playing in the Round of 16 against Atletico Madrid. First match on Guiseppe Meazza, Inter won 1:0. They have a great chance to advance to Round of 8 if they manage to keep the score in their favour.

Earlier this year, Inter played the Italian Super Cup. The format of the Super Cup is bit changed and 4 teams play small tournament. This year, the Super Cup took place in Saudi Arabia. Inter lifted this trophy. They played against Napoli and won 1:0 with late winner by Lautaro Martinez.

In Coppa Italia, they lost to Bologna in December, so they will not defend the title this year. However, after the little bit surprising loss to Bologna, Inter played 15 games. They won 14 and draw 1 game against Genoa. So, in 2024, Inter does not know what it feels to lose a game. After the draw against Genoa, they played 10 games and won them all.

It is almost certain now that Inter will lift the trophy at the end of the season.

UEFA Champions League

Having basically secured the title in the Serie A, this gives Inzaghi the chance to rest some players and rotate the squad. This will allow him to have the best 11 against Atletico Madrid. First games in the Round of 16 was played at Guiseppe Meazza and Inter won 1:0. The next game is on schedule on Wednesday, 13th of March. They have a good chance of advancing to the next stage. It is out of the question that Inter wants to go as further as possible in this competition. Not having to think much on the Serie A, they are in good position. Who knows, maybe we will watch Inter – Manchester City again in the final. Inter definitely deserved such an end of the season. To crown the perfect season behind them.

Whatever happens in the Champions League, this was one of the best seasons so far in Inter’s history if we do not count the famous treble won in 2010.
