Top 5 Football Clubs in Europe in 2021

In this article we will write about top 5 football clubs in Europe for 2021. This will be tough to decide, but we will take into the account only the 2020/2021 season. There are many football clubs that showed well this season. Some played below expectations while others surprised. Clubs such as Arsenal, Barcelona, Liverpool and Juventus have pretty below-standard season behind them. It is to be expected that these clubs show us something else in the next season. We will also see how these clubs will do business throughout the transfer window this summer.

As you may know, Juventus changed the head coach. Pirlo is replaced with Allegri. It means that Juventus will do the best they can to leave the previous season behind them. After 9 years of domination in Italian Serie A, they finished fourth, clinching the final spot in next season’s Champions League by one point in front of Napoli. They were lucky enough since Napoli did not managed to take 3 points in the final match of the season against Verona.

When it comes to England Premier League, Arsenal did not qualify for any European competition. This is the first time in 25 years that they will not be a part of European football. Liverpool on the other hand managed to grab the third place and qualify for the next season’s Champions League. Compared to the previous season, they played below the expectations. To remind you, Liverpool won the Premier League in the 2019/2020 season with 18 points in front of Manchester City.

Now, let’s see the top 5 clubs in Europe for season 2020/2021. Here are our picks:

5. Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid won the Spanish La Liga. They played really well this season with couple downs. Luckily, the major contenders for the title (Barcelona and Real Madrid), did not take advantage of it. Whenever Atletico lost points, these two did as well. Atletico played closed games in the terms of tactics which can be seen on how many goals they scored throughout the competition. They scored 68 goals which is less than 1 goal per game. On the other hand they conceded the least goals in the league which most likely brought them the title. One of the key moves was to sign Luis Suarez whom Barcelona released at the end of the previous season. This turned out to be bad move as Suarez scored 21 goals (almost a third of total goals Atletico scored).

4. Lille

Refreshment in the French Ligue One. After the years of PSG domination, Lille won the title. It was tight race with PSG. At one point, near the end of the competition, 4 clubs contested the title. Those were Lille, PSG, AS Monaco and Lyon. At the end, the battle was between Lille and PSG. Lille clinched the title in last round as they won the match against Angers. They have won 24 games, two less than PSG but luckily for them, PSG lost 8 times while Lille lost only three games. Similar like Atletico Madrid, Lille played more defensively having scored 64 goals throughout campaign and conceding only 23 times.

3. Bayern Munich

There is nothing new in German Bundesliga. Bayern Munich won the championship by 13 points in front of RB Leipzig. During the course of the competition, they scored 99 times making the average of 2,9 goals per game. When it comes to defense, they are fifth in the league having conceded 44 times. Their highest scoring game was against FC Schalke 04 beating them 8:0. How strong is Bayern, shows both team and individual statistics. They scored most goals in the competition. As we mentioned above, Bayern Munich scored 99 goals and they created 119 big chances, with 73 assists. They also had the highest ball possession, 61%.

Concerning the individual statistics, Robert Lewandowski scored 41 goals in 29 games he played. Thomas Muller had 18 assists throughout the season.

2. Inter Milan

After 11 years, Inter finally won the Italian Serie A. They done it in a magnificent way. They won 91 points which is the highest in leading five football leagues in Europe, also known as “Big Five”. Inter managed to throw down Juventus from the throne. Mastermind behind the success is Antonio Conte, head manager. He assembled all the pieces that were necessary to win the championship. He strengthen the defense and encouraged the offense to put it like this. The defense orientation with the superb counter-attack brought Inter their 19 Scudetto. The mentality he inserted in the players mind was magnificent. The players never withdraw and there were several games where Inter had to chase the result and came out victorious. Best player in the team is Romelu Lukaku who scored 24 times and assisted in 11 occasions. However, we will see how the next season will go for Inter as Antonio Conte and Inter parted ways only couple of days after lifting the Serie A trophy. There are certain speculations that one of the key players will leave Inter in order to sort out the finances. Nevertheless, it is certain that the next season will be very interesting for the fans of Serie A.

1. Chelsea

Number one in our list is Chelsea. Even though they did not play well this year in the England Premier League, they deserved this place. Chelsea managed to secure fourth position in the league in last round. Many thanks go to Leicester who lost against Tottenham in the same round. Otherwise, Chelsea would be fifth. However, if they knew what would happen on 29th of May, they would not bother about the fourth place at all. To be precise, they won the European Champions League. In a match against Manchester City (only third time in history where two English clubs fought for the Champions League title), Chelsea won 1:0. The only scorer in the game was Kai Havertz. This was his first goal in the Champions League, and what a timing to score it.

One of the main reasons for us placing the Chelsea in the top spot is their manager Thomas Tuchel. He took charge of Chelsea in January after Frank Lampard was sacked due to poor results. In the meantime, Tuchel managed to drive Chelsea towards the position number 4 which secured them the spot in the next year’s Champions League. In the period from January until May, Chelsea won 19 games, they draw 6 times and lost 5 games. Additionally, Tuchel managed to outplay Pep Guardiola 3 times in this period. First, Chelsea won in the Premier League game. Second game was the FA Final and third game was the European Champions League final. Lots of credit goes to the coach who was sucked by PSG as they wanted to win Champions League.

We hope you enjoyed the list. We would love to hear your opinion in the comments section.
